The Installation
The Installation
The installation is designed to enhance the entrance of Esplanade Park in Capitola, creating a new gathering space while keeping all existing art, seating, and landscaping in place.
What the installation includes:
-
A bronze female surfer statue and board — foundation pier anchored to bedrock for structural reinforcement
-
Curved concrete benches — creating a welcoming promenade with ocean views
-
Native coastal plantings — chosen for the coastal environment, requiring minimal irrigation once established
-
Bronze donor recognition inlays — integrated into the surrounding benches and pavement as permanent community commemoration
-
All existing park elements stay — art, seating, and landscaping remain in place
The Site
Working with city staff, we have identified the entrance of Esplanade Park as the proposed location. The design features a rounded “bump-out” extension that expands the park footprint at the entrance — similar in design to the existing extension at the corner of Stockton Avenue and Esplanade, where the sidewalk was expanded to include areas for benches, bike parking, and landscaping. She will face the Christmas palm tree and gaze over her left shoulder toward the ocean.
